How to care for leather harnesses and chokers: the complete guide
You’ve invested in quality that’s made to last for years. Whether it’s your favourite leather harness or choker, the right care is the key to keeping the material looking beautiful and letting it mature into a patina that’s all its own.
Our products are made from full-grain, vegetable-tanned cowhide. This is the finest layer of the hide, and it keeps its natural grain and deep colour. Because it’s a natural material, it needs a little special attention.
4 essential rules for long-lasting leather
1. Beware of water and moisture (Enemy No. 1)
Vegetable-tanned leather is a ‘living’ material, and it’s sensitive to excess moisture.
- What to do if it gets wet: Wipe it straight away with a dry cloth.
- How to dry it: Let the leather dry naturally at room temperature.
- What to avoid: NEVER use a hairdryer or a radiator, and keep it out of direct sunlight. Heating leather too quickly makes it stiffen and crack.
- Liquid stains: Blot up wine or oil with a dry cloth, and never rub it deeper into the pores.
2. Regular cleaning and dusting
Dust can act like sandpaper and slowly wear away the surface finish.
- Use a soft, clean cotton cloth.
- If the leather is more heavily soiled, choose a specialist cleaner made exclusively for aniline or vegetable-tanned leather. Always test it on a small, hidden spot before you apply it.
3. Hydration: conditioner is a must
To keep your Harnesstor piece supple and its colour rich, it needs a little ‘nourishment’.
- When to treat it: Ideally every 3–6 months, or whenever the leather feels dry to the touch.
- What to use: A good-quality leather balm or a colourless conditioner for natural leather.
- Be careful with colours: On light shades (such as pink), choose products carefully so you don’t change the original shade.
4. Proper storage (shape matters)
Leather has a ‘shape memory’. If you toss it in a corner, it can end up creased and unsightly.
- Store it in the dark: Direct sunlight fades the colour and dries out the fibres.
- Keep its shape: Ideally, store your leather harness or choker by hanging it up. That way you’ll avoid permanent creases.
Why every change is natural
Remember that real leather isn’t just an accessory – it’s an investment. This material ages along with you. A change in shade, fine wrinkles or patina aren’t flaws – they’re proof of authenticity and natural origin. That makes every piece from our workshop a true one-off. The same care applies to harness tops as well as harness bottoms, men’s harnesses or a handbag.
